I was looking for information on building a custom transmission to replace a c-6 on the back end of my 429 in a '71 Torino. I want to put an overdrive if not a dual overdrive setup. What would the possible outcomes be for the final gear ratios that you may be able to do or if it is even possible to build a custom gearbox with an overdrive around 0.3 or so. Thank you for the help and any advice edited by Carguy on 5/18/2010

To get a double overdrive you would have to put a Gear Vendor's unit on the back of the 4R100 transmission. Your OD ratio would be .55 or .57 we can't change that and I'm afraidthat you would have to modify the tunnel to raise it about an inch. Wejust put a 4R70W in a 70 Torino and it was a real tight fit. The 4R100is a larger transmission but it's the only overdrive that will bolt toyour engine and handle the added horsepower of the 429. A Compushift controller would control the shifts and the manual lever may need to be modified, I would like to see a picture of your lever. If you went with only the 4R100 the output splines are the same but the drive shaft would have to be shortened. The Gear Vendor's unit comes with a yoke. Joe
