Awareness: What a T-56 Magnum Swap Involves
The T-56 Magnum swap for the 1st generation Camaro is a very popular conversion. Installing the transmission requires raising the factory tunnel approximately 2 inches to obtain the correct driveline angles. Bowler Performance carries the correct tunnel patch sheet metal and the crossmember needed to achieve the correct clearance and driveline angle.
The other parts needed for this conversion are as follows:
- Bellhousing. Steel or Aluminum available.
- Clutch and flywheel, including hardware
- Pilot bearing or bushing
- Hydraulic throwout bearing and master cylinder kit
- Appropriate wiring pigtails
- 31 spline slip yoke and driveshaft
- Offset shifter that provides correct placement in the factory console. Shift lever and knob
- Transmission mount and crossmember
- Fluid
- Tunnel patch
Consideration: TKX vs. T-56 Magnum
When considering a 5 or 6 speed conversion, there are multiple things to consider.
- Fitment. The TKX 5-speed was designed to fit the transmission tunnel of a 1st gen Camaro without any cutting or tunnel modifications. The Tremec 6-speed will require significant tunnel modification.
- Power handling ability. The TKX is rated for 600 lb-ft of torque. The Magnum is rated for 750 lb-ft of torque.
- Cost. The TKX is $2,895.00. The Magnum 6-speed is $3,545.00.
- Vehicle purpose. Depending on the driving style, one transmission may suit the vehicle better.
- Available overdrives. The TKX and the Magnum offer various gear ratios to help pair with the vehicle's engine, weight, and tire size.
- Upgrades. Bowler Performance can upgrade both transmissions. These upgrades provide faster, smoother shifts under higher engine horsepower and high engine RPMs. Whether you have a daily driver, pro-touring Camaro, or a dedicated track car, we can provide the modifications to get the most out of your ride.
